WAR of 1812
It all began in 1812. The Brits were stealing our sailors and forcing them to join their British navy. President James Madison and the War Hawk in Congress wanted the Brits to know that we were not going to be humilated and abused. America declared war on Britain.
Let the battle begin! We wanted Canada since we knew that taking over the land would run out the Brits. Well, that failed. The British soldiers up in Canada were stronger than we thought. They fought us out of Canada.
We didn't give up just yet. Our battleship, named the Constitution, sank the Brits' best warship. They weren't too happy about that at all. Can you imagine the look on their faces when they got the news that their ship had been sunk?? They got really upset and captured out Capital City, Washington D.C. They even burned the White House to the ground. Luckily, Dolly Madison, the president's wife, saved some valuables from the house.
I guess they were still mad about the ship sinking ordeal because the Brits also thought they could attack Fort McHenry. Boy were they wrong! This is the place that Francis Scott Key wrote our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. Go ahead and sing it, I know you have heard it at sporting events. The Brits are defeated by the American troops. Those sore losers decided to try and take down our port in New Orleans. Yeah, that didn't work out too week for them either. Ole Stonewall Jackson recruited some men around the area to prove to those Brits that 'Merica is tough. We win again!
America wins the war agains the British. We are so proud and prideful about winning that we teach you about it today! Check out the power point at the top of the page for some good cause and effect details!
